Two Wolverine games just swapped costumes. One is free.

Players who pick up MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls can download Insomniac Games' Wolverine Battle Reborn suit for free starting September 1. In the other direction, those who unlock the Fighting Souls-inspired suit in Marvel's Wolverine through normal progression will get a stylized look that debuted in Arc System Works' fighter. The arrangement was revealed during back-to-back San Diego Comic-Con panels this week.

Reciprocal costumes

The costume deal is the first public collaboration between Insomniac Games and Arc System Works. The Fighting Souls team visited Insomniac's studio with an early build of the game and took feedback on balance and feel. Arc System Works historically kept alternate costumes limited in its fighting games, but MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls puts more emphasis on cosmetic variety as a way to keep characters fresh. The Ultimate Edition also includes a suit based on the Advanced Suit 2.0 from Marvel's Spider-Man 2, first announced earlier this year.

Insomniac's own Wolverine game, due later this year, revealed a new story trailer at the same SDCC panel. The studio also confirmed that composer David Fleming is handling the score and that a digital prequel comic written by narrative director Walt Williams is available now.

Phoenix Cyclops leads year 1 DLC

Producer Takeshi Yamanaka confirmed that Phoenix Cyclops, voiced by Ray Chase, will be the first additional character released as part of the game's year-1 content plan. This version of Cyclops draws from his Phoenix Five incarnation during the Avengers vs. X-Men storyline, combining standard Optic Blasts and hand-to-hand combat with Phoenix Force abilities. Yamanaka said more details on the fighting style are coming closer to release.

Arc System Works did not announce pricing for the DLC or a release window beyond 'year 1' but said more characters, stages, and costumes are planned after launch.

Open beta starts July 24

The MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls open beta runs from July 24 through July 26 on PlayStation 5 and PC. Anyone with a PlayStation account and internet connection can participate. The roster, originally set at 15 characters, now includes Green Goblin as a playable addition. This is the last free playtest before the full launch, which Yamanaka described as 'the starting point' for ongoing updates.

Anime-style opening with rock vocals

The game's opening movie, produced by Japanese studio Sanzigen, features a theme song with two vocalists: Keiko Terada of SHOW-YA and mayu of NEMOPHILA. The lyrics were written by Kanata Okajima, with composition and arrangement by MEG (MEGMETAL). The animation was directed by Daisuke Suzuki of Sanzigen, whom Yamanaka described as a passionate Marvel fan.
