Rhythm games: October 13 on Switch, PS5, Xbox

Just Dance's 35 new songs matter less than the library behind them

Decades of Hits brings 35 songs and a new Adventure Mode on October 13, but the quieter shift is a shared library that folds four years of purchased Just Dance songs into one menu.

Just Dance's 35 new songs matter less than the library behind them

The tracklist is the easy part to sell. Just Dance: Decades of Hits arrives October 13 on Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a Switch 2 version following on November 10, and it carries 35 songs pulled from six decades of pop. The detail buried at the end of the announcement matters more than the setlist: anyone who owns the new edition along with any of the Just Dance 2023 through 2026 games can reach every song they own from a single library, including tracks from purchased Music Packs and songs served through an active Just Dance+ subscription. Cross-title content sharing is rare, but it happens, as when Arc System Works and Insomniac traded Wolverine costumes across two games.

The announcement frames that as a convenience, promising players will no longer "switch games or separate menus." Read it again and the scope is narrower than it sounds. The libraries combine on the same console, which points to a device-level merge rather than an account that follows a player from PlayStation to Switch, and the wording says nothing about songs from editions released before 2023.

A library that stops resetting every year

Music games that ship a new edition each year have a quiet problem: the songs you paid for stay locked inside the edition that introduced them. The merge treats the series less like a stack of annual discs and more like a collection that accumulates, where each purchase adds to the same pile instead of starting a new one. A single game kept alive with free updates for a decade can build the same kind of collection, which is the model No Man's Sky has followed since launch.

That matters most to players who kept their old copies. It also gives lapsed buyers a reason to hold onto them, and it turns Just Dance+ into a layer on top of a permanent collection instead of a rental. The subscription still governs part of it: the announcement counts Just Dance+ tracks as available only while that subscription is active, so letting it lapse removes those songs from the merged library. Subscription value is a moving target elsewhere too: Game Pass Ultimate three-month codes just fell to $39.

Six worlds and a new story mode

Adventure Mode is the biggest addition, and it comes closest to a single-player campaign. Players follow Lyra, described as Dr. Gigavolt's daughter, through six decade-themed worlds, with mini-activities, exclusive rewards and dances set to songs from each era. It reads as a bet that a story gives solo players something to do between parties, the same bet fighting games have made with progression modes like Sparking Zero's Limit Breaker Journey.

Eleven of the 35 tracks, from ABBA to Bad Bunny

The announcement names 11 songs out of the 35 that will ship. They range across the decades the game is built around:

The Switch 2 version lands a month later

Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S get the game on October 13. The Switch 2 build arrives November 10. The announcement does not explain the gap, and it does not say whether one purchase covers both Nintendo machines or whether players who move from Switch to Switch 2 will have to buy the game again. For anyone planning that upgrade this winter, that is the unanswered question that decides whether the merge is worth much. Moving a library across console generations is messy everywhere, as Microsoft's gradual Xbox 360-to-PC rollout shows.

Phones as controllers, and a party mode that rewrites the rules

Up to six people can dance locally, and a phone works as the controller, so no one has to buy extra hardware. Party Mode changes the rules every round. Workout Mode tracks the calories burned in each dance. Profiles also get a new multiple dancer card system, though the announcement does not explain how those cards work or what they hold.

No price appears anywhere in the announcement.

The tracklist will sell the game in October. Whether the shared library keeps players coming back in 2027 depends on answers the announcement does not give.
