Mistral AI raised 1.7 billion euros in a Series C round at an 11.7 billion euro valuation. ASML Holding, the Dutch company whose lithography machines are essential for chip fabrication, led the round. Existing backers Andreessen Horowitz, Bpifrance, General Catalyst and NVIDIA also participated. Compared to Together AI's recent $800 million raise for open inference, Mistral's round is more than double the size and tied to a hardware partner, per coverage of Together AI's round.
A strategic match
ASML is an unusual lead for an AI startup round. CEO Christophe Fouquet said the partnership aims to develop AI products for ASML's customers and explore joint research. For Mistral, the deal opens the semiconductor value chain, where AI can optimize chip design and control manufacturing.
Arthur Mensch, Mistral's CEO, framed the investment as a convergence of two technology leaders in the same value chain. "We have the ambition to help ASML and its numerous partners solve current and future engineering challenges through AI," he said.
From text tokens to factory sensors
Mistral has been pushing beyond text generation for months. Earlier in 2025, it acquired Emmi AI, a startup that builds physics simulation models for industrial use, as covered in detail as Mistral's move into physics AI. That acquisition, combined with the new funding, points to a clear strategy: Mistral wants to own AI for manufacturing, not just chatbots.
Mistral's previous fundraise of 600 million euros in 2024, led by General Catalyst, was already engineering-focused. The new round, larger and more targeted, specifically funds scientific research, custom industrial models and compute infrastructure, the company says.
Independence and the European angle
Since its founding in April 2023, Mistral has raised over a billion euros in equity. It maintains an independent stance, offering open-weight models like Mixtral 8x22B alongside proprietary solutions. Observers compare this dual strategy to Meta's Llama but with a European regulatory focus. Demand for open models has surged, with platforms like Ollama struggling to keep up according to report.
The ASML backstop cements Mistral's role as a European AI champion. The Paris-based company, which employs about 80 people and plans to grow, can now bid for industrial contracts in aerospace, automotive and semiconductors with a strategic partner and capital to match. Its enterprise tooling, including new connector controls detailed in this analysis, aim to secure industrial customers.
Execution is the variable. Google, Anthropic and OpenAI all target enterprise customers with larger teams and established cloud partnerships. Mistral is betting that embedding itself deep in one hardware supply chain will yield an advantage that general-purpose AI companies cannot easily replicate. Meanwhile, competitors are also moving: Claude Code's recent multi-model routing update shows orchestration innovation as reported.
