The Division 2's dust storm event gives free New York access and new horrors

For the next two weeks, anyone with a copy of The Division 2 can jump into the Warlords of New York campaign without buying the expansion. Ubisoft is giving everyone access, no expansion purchase required. The catch: the entire lower Manhattan map is now wracked by sandstorms that change everything about how you move and fight.

Two dust storm intensities cycle through the event. A calm dust storm is the default when you log in, cutting visibility but still manageable. It lasts about 18 minutes before escalating. The raging dust storm is the real problem: visibility drops further, and wind noise drowns out enemy footsteps. That phase lasts eight minutes before the storm subsides into a brief sunny period. The cycle repeats throughout your session.

During the raging storm, the Dust Devils spawn: Rikers who use the weather as cover. Every six minutes, a squad of four named enemies spawns and hunts you down. To hurt them, you need to get close. Beyond 26 meters, they have 80% status resistance and deal 50% less damage to you. Under 10 meters, they take 50% more damage. Two bosses can appear after enough kills: Pall, a sniper who hides with a Decoy and is invisible to Pulse, and Black Lung, a tank with an LMG and an Artillery Turret. Defeating each boss for the first time earns a unique mask, and they drop Storm Keys every time.

After the raging storm ends, a Scoured Hunter prowls Lower Manhattan. They carry Storm Keys and a distinctive mask; defeat them to claim it.

Storm Keys drop from Dust Devils and the Scoured Hunter, and also appear in 20 loot caches scattered across the map. The Dust Devils repair these caches daily. The Event Vendor trades Storm Keys for five new outfits, chroma variants, a weapon skin, and other gear. Collecting all vanity items from the Apparel Cache unlocks the Black Blizzard Scanner Pulse Skill VFX. A community challenge tracks total Storm Keys collected across the player base: 20 keys earn the St. Elmo's Engine Exotic Weapon, 60 keys unlock the Lexington Named Weapon, and 200 keys grant the St. Elmo's Engine Red Alert Weapon Skin.

Alongside the event, Realism Mode returns for the Warlords of New York campaign. No HUD, no ammo drops; you scavenge from enemies, and everyone dies faster. Completing Liberty Island on Realism Mode rewards a weapon skin, and finishing the entire campaign on Realism Mode with a Hardcore Character unlocks additional camo skins.

The update also includes a new Classified Assignment in Washington D.C. called McMillan Reservoir Assault, where you rescue an agent caught between the Hyenas and True Sons. Ubisoft has also activated a free weekly rotation of older assignments. The Paradise Lost Incursion has been refreshed with a new Exotic weapon and rotating events, paving the way for the next Incursion later this season.

Three content creators, NGN, Charles, and FelipeRaamos, run their own Project Chains with daily tasks across Named Zones, rewarding exclusive backpacks and crafting materials. The event runs through August 11 on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC via Ubisoft Store, Steam, Epic Games Store, and Ubisoft+ subscriptions.
