Three of Apple Arcade's five October games are already on the App Store

Apple Arcade's October drop lands on October 1 with five games, and the arithmetic is worth doing before the marketing copy. Two are new to the service. The other three already exist on the App Store and arrive as subscription versions without advertising or in-app purchases, the same move Block Blast! made in September.

The new titles are Pusheen's Place, which Apple calls the first officially licensed game starring Pusheen the Cat and says is exclusive to Apple Arcade, and River City Survivors, a zombie action game from what the release calls a "long-running River City series." The conversions are Terraria+, Touchgrind BMX 2+, and 4 Pics 1 Word+.

Pusheen's Place puts the character ahead of the game

Apple's description of Pusheen's Place leads with the character. The release calls Pusheen "the global icon of cuteness and whimsy," and the design follows: players build a cozy paradise and collect more than 100 cats, decorating rooms for characters including Pusheenicorn and Pancake Pusheen. Three mini-games ship inside it, named Snack Stack, Parfait Pop, and Batch Match.

Apple files the title in what it calls Arcade's "thriving catalog of cozy games," alongside Hello Kitty Island Adventure, Tamagotchi Adventure Kingdom, and Cozy Caravan. The cozy shelf is filling up off-platform too, with Flamecraft's PS5 demo the console-side version of the same trend. Licensed characters arrive with audiences attached, which saves the service the work of building a mascot from nothing; Brawlhalla's Shrek crossover is the same bet on a borrowed name.

River City Survivors and three returning App Store titles

River City Survivors is the second new entry and the more conventional of the two: a "survivors-like," in Apple's phrasing, where players fight off waves of zombies and pick randomized upgrades that reshuffle each run. There are more than 20 playable characters, including series fixtures Kunio and Riki, and players can recruit up to two companions.

Terraria+ is a known quantity with a plus sign attached. The Arcade build bundles the 1.4.5 "Bigger & Boulder" update, bringing a Dead Cells crossover and Pals from Palworld, and supports up to eight players through Game Center or local Wi-Fi across more than 20 biomes. Touchgrind BMX 2+ is a physics-driven BMX game built around two-finger controls. 4 Pics 1 Word+ is the Arcade edition of a puzzle game that Apple says has "stumped and delighted more than 400 million players worldwide."

What $6.99 buys, and where each game runs

Apple Arcade costs $6.99 a month in the US with a one-month free trial. Buyers of a new iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV get three months free, limited to new subscribers, valid for three months after device activation, and capped at one subscription per Family Sharing group. Every plan renews until cancelled. Apple One bundles the service at $21.95 for Individual, $27.95 for Family, and $39.95 for Premier. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, the nearest comparable bundle, has been discounting three-month codes to $39.

One subscription covers up to six family members across a catalog Apple puts at more than 200 games, but the device list carries the sharper detail. Apple's notes say Arcade Originals play on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple Vision Pro, while App Store Greats reach only iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro. Availability also depends on hardware and software compatibility, and Apple warns some content may not be available in all areas.

What the October mix says about Apple Arcade's catalog

Apple does not publish the reasoning behind a monthly lineup, so the mix has to speak for itself, and October's is legible. Three of the five entries are conversions of games that already built an audience on the App Store, re-cut without ads or in-app purchases. Of the two new titles, the one Apple leads with is built on someone else's character.

The value math from the player's side is easy enough. 4 Pics 1 Word has already reached the casual audience Apple is courting, and an ad-free version is a reasonable pitch to someone who would not pay a monthly fee for a puzzle game alone. Terraria+ does the same job for sandbox players, with the 1.4.5 update as the sweetener. It is the same reasoning behind August's PlayStation Plus slate, which stacked zombie parkour against cozy puzzles for the same spread of subscribers.

What the lineup does not do is answer the harder question about a catalog that leans on conversions. Familiarity is renewable only up to a point, and the App Store holds a finite number of favorites worth re-cutting. Pusheen's Place is the only one of the five Apple describes as exclusive to the service. It is also the one it led the announcement with.
