August lineup serves zombie parkour, cozy puzzles, and retro horror

PlayStation Plus has been known for some months where the three games don't share a genre. August takes that to an extreme: Dying Light 2 drops you into zombie-infested ruins with parkour moves, Big Walk invites you and friends to solve puzzles through conversation alone, and Signalis throws you into a low-fi space horror that feels like a nightmare from the 80s. It is a mix that reflects what makes subscription services work when they commit to variety, much like Apple TV+'s strategy of spreading nominations across 15 different shows.

Dying Light 2 Stay Human: Reloaded Edition (PS5, PS4)

Zombie games are a dime a dozen, but Dying Light 2 makes the undead climb. You play as Aiden Caldwell, a parkour-savvy survivor in a city torn apart by factions and a virus that turns people into monsters. The Reloaded Edition bundles all previous updates and content for the best experience. Play solo or bring up to three friends. If you join someone else's game, you will see how different their world turned out based on their choices.

Big Walk (PS5)

Big Walk is the opposite of a zombie game. There is no combat, no timer, no health bar. It is a cooperative walking simulator where the main challenge is talking to your friends. You explore a large open world, solve puzzles together, and when you get separated, you use tools to find each other again. Sometimes the game takes away your ability to speak, and you have to improvise. And if you so choose, you can steal your friend's virtual binoculars and kick them into the ocean. That is a real feature.

Signalis (PS4)

Signalis is a love letter to the survival horror games of the 90s. You play as Elster, a kind of android technician who wakes up on a crashed spaceship and starts searching for her partner. The world is a Lynchian mix of retro technology and cosmic horror, with puzzles that will baffle you and creatures that will chase you down cramped corridors. Play it in the dark with headphones. The game works better if you know as little as possible going in. It is a throwback that evokes the same retro fascination as the Clapper gadget, a piece of tech nostalgia remembered fondly despite its flaws.

Marvel Tōkōn: Fighting Souls pack

If fighting games are more your speed, from August 6 you can grab a free MARVEL Tōkōn: Fighting Souls pack. It unlocks five avatar icons (Captain America, Storm, Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, and Ghost Rider among them) and new victory poses for 20 characters. The pack is available until August 6, 2027, so you have some time, but do not delay.

This month's lineup proves PlayStation Plus can still serve up surprises. Not every month needs a blockbuster; sometimes the mix is what makes it work. In a subscription landscape where every service tries to lock you in, this curation stands out. It is a different approach from the Bento office suite, which challenges the rented model entirely. Here, the strategy is not to own one genre but to offer something for everyone.
