iPhone Duo arrives at $1,999 with Apple's flagship AI still in beta

Apple's iPhone Duo press release is, for the company, unusually forthcoming. It lays out a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.4-inch outer display that Apple says gives 90 percent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro, a grade 5 titanium enclosure, an IP68 dust and water rating, and a hinge assembled from more than 100 components. Pre-orders open Friday, October 16, with availability starting Friday, October 23.

The price is disclosed too. iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the U.S., or $83.29 a month over 24 months, across 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage tiers.

So the interesting gaps sit elsewhere. The release carries no independent benchmarks, only comparisons Apple ran itself: up to 35 percent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro, a 6-core CPU it calls "up to 20 percent faster than A19 Pro," and a 7-core GPU "up to 40 percent faster." There is no fold-cycle durability figure for the hinge or the inner panel, no camera sample a reader can evaluate, and no date for Apple Pencil support beyond "later this year." For a category where rival prototypes often surface under test, the way Oppo's did, Apple is asking buyers to take the hinge on faith.

Weighing Apple's 'most transformational' claim

"iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original," John Ternus, Apple's CEO, says in the release. That sentence carries more weight than any spec on the page, and it is also the one no press release can settle.

One word choice works against it. Apple calls the device "the first foldable iPhone," not the first foldable. That phrasing accepts a category that already exists, so the claim turns from an act of invention into an argument about execution. The pitch then rests on a hinge that "offers a smooth, satisfying feel," a nano-texture finish that "minimizes crease visibility," and two displays that share an aspect ratio so content scales without a visible jump. That is a separate problem to solve, and it is the same one Apple took on with immersive 3D sports on Vision Pro.

Those are exactly the qualities a datasheet cannot prove. The claim will not be tested on October 23. It will be tested on the hinge, over months of open-and-close cycles, by people who never read the press release at all.

The CEO who put his name on the superlative

The release identifies John Ternus as Apple's CEO and puts its boldest line in his mouth. It says nothing about how long he has held the role. What it does establish is that the top of the company, not a product marketing lead, is the voice calling the device "transformational."

That is a normal move for a flagship launch and a telling one for this product, because foldables carry a category risk slab phones do not. The mechanism either holds up or it does not, and software cannot hide a hinge that loosens. Whoever runs Apple is now on record that this is the biggest change to the iPhone since the first one.

Siri AI is the sales pitch, and it is still in beta

The feature Apple leans on hardest to sell iPhone Duo is not the hinge. It is Siri AI, which the release describes as "an entirely new version of Siri that is rolling out in beta with iOS 27." The beta label is not incidental. Apple says Siri AI rolls out Monday, September 14, in English first, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish following in October. It will not be available at all initially in the EU on iOS, iPadOS or watchOS. The bloc has been tightening its AI rules, down to requirements that AI-generated content carry a mark, which is why Anthropic is now watermarking Claude's output.

The release also attaches limits to the features that run on Apple's servers. Siri AI and other cloud-backed tools, including intelligent photo editing, Image Playground and AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts, are subject to daily usage limits, with expanded access "available for a fee in the future." Siri AI is not available to users under 13. It is one piece of a wider push: Apple keeps folding AI into iOS features beyond the assistant, from bill splitting to mapping, according to its 2027 services roadmap.

On privacy, Apple says Apple Intelligence runs on-device or on Private Cloud Compute, which it says extends the iPhone's privacy and security into the cloud. That claim is architectural and can be checked only by parties with access to Apple's systems.

Split View is the first real foldable feature, and it is a tablet idea

The strongest concrete argument for the fold is multitasking. Split View lets users run two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time, open two windows of the same app like Safari, talk to Siri AI while viewing content on the other half of the screen, and save pairs of apps to reopen later.

Whether that is a new interaction model or a ported tablet experience is the open question. Developers can adapt apps through new APIs in the latest SDKs, with iPhone Duo support coming to Device Hub in Xcode. Apple names Netflix, Zoom and Slack as apps already building for the larger display. Three apps on a launch slide is a start, not a verdict, and the form factor works only if enough developers build for the open state rather than a stretched phone.

Apple Pencil, which iPhone Duo will support in a USB-C version, waits until later this year by Apple's own timeline. Until it ships, the inner display's productivity case rests on Split View alone.

The fold is not what will decide this. Apple is entering a category it did not create, at a starting price of $1,999, with its flagship AI feature shipped as a beta. The hinge will hold or it will not. Siri AI will graduate out of beta or it will not. Both answers arrive after the receipt does.
