Sony's new Wolverine PS5 lineup: one $650 console, three $75 covers

Sony mostly talks about aesthetics here, but the commercial shape underneath is the more interesting part. The Marvel's Wolverine hardware line runs to six products and two colorways, with exactly one console in it: a PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, Battle Yellow bundle at $649.99 US, with a matching DualSense controller and a code for the game. Everything else is covers for consoles people already own, plus two controllers sold on their own.

The rollout follows last month's San Diego Comic-Con panel, where Insomniac Games and Marvel Games locked in a September 15, 2026 release for the game and showed its story trailer. Sony has now posted the full inventory on the PlayStation Blog, with the hardware landing September 15 in limited quantities and pre-orders opening August 19.

The lineup: one console, three covers, two controllers

Stack the SKUs and the pattern is clear. Sony sells one complete console bundle in Battle Yellow, then three cover sets at $74.99 each: one for the slim PS5, one for the PS5 Pro, both in yellow, and a third for the PS5 Pro in the metallic Adamantium finish. The yellow look takes its cues from Wolverine's Battle Reborn suit in the game, with claw marks cut across the shell. Sony says the design lets players "peek under the hood" of the console.

Two standalone DualSense controllers round out the line, one per colorway, at $84.99 each. The Adamantium controller matches the Pro covers' metallic finish. There is no PS5 Pro bundle in the lineup; Pro owners get the $74.99 shell instead.

The hand-drawn ink behind the yellow shell

The design credit goes to Jock, the Scottish graphic artist who contributed key art for the game. Sony wanted Wolverine's "primal energy" in hardware form and credits the line's bold graphic tone to Jock's comics work. The pitch rests on that contrast: Jock still draws everything by hand. In the announcement, he says the result surprised him:

"I still draw all my artwork traditionally, so the opportunity to marry cutting-edge hardware with the energy and looseness of hand-drawn ink is incredibly exciting. I'm stunned by how well the console and accessories captured the raw energy of the drawing, bringing Wolverine to life in a completely unique way."

Insomniac's creative director, Marcus Smith, makes the same argument in the post: "Jock's illustrations are grounded and raw and perfectly personify Wolverine." He frames the character as someone whose primary interaction with the world is through "unbreakable Adamantium claws."

Where the scarce pieces actually ship

The availability split matters more than the prices. The bundle and the Battle Yellow controller are global products. The cover sets and the entire Adamantium line are not: Sony is selling them through its direct storefront in 11 countries, and everywhere else through "select retailers" in "limited quantities." The direct.playstation.com regions are the US, UK, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Austria.

That shape is deliberate for a collector program. The one full console, the entry point for anyone who does not already own a PS5, gets the widest distribution. The cheaper covers are narrowed to Sony's own store with capped runs. The Pro-only Adamantium pieces, the ones most likely to sell out first, have the tightest supply. Sony is also betting on scarce physical hardware at a time when Microsoft is reportedly weighing an exit from console hardware, per the leaked roadmap coverage.

Pre-orders via direct.playstation.com open August 19: 7 AM PT and 10 AM ET in the US, 10 AM local in the UK and Europe. Sony adds free launch-day delivery on eligible orders from its own store. The wider retail run follows September 15, same day as the game, in limited quantities.

The suit that inspired the yellow bundle is working other channels too. At Comic-Con, Insomniac and Arc System Works announced a crossover that gives MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls players the same Battle Reborn suit free from September 1.

Add it up: one console for new buyers, three covers for existing owners, two controllers, and one colorway only PS5 Pro owners can touch. Whether collectors bite is the part Sony cannot script. The August 19 pre-order window is the first real signal. That kind of window just produced a 30% pre-order jump for Samsung's three-way foldable split, per the launch numbers.
