Apple's record June quarter came with a tariff-refund boost

Apple closed its fiscal third quarter with the best June quarter in its history, and a footnote that will follow the number around. Revenue for the three months ended June 27 came in at $109.4 billion, up 16 percent year over year. Diluted earnings per share were $2.02, up 29 percent. Both set June quarter records. So did operating cash flow, according to Kevan Parekh, Apple's CFO.

A record quarter, with a footnote

The asterisk sits in the margin. Apple's gross margin was 50.1 percent, including a favorable impact of roughly 2 percentage points from tariff refunds. Those same refunds added $0.11 to diluted EPS. Strip them out and the quarter still clears the record books, but EPS drops to about $1.91 and gross margin to roughly 48 percent. Apple did not detail what prompted the refunds or whether they will repeat.

Q3 FY2026 metricResult
Revenue$109.4B, up 16% YoY
Gross margin50.1%, incl. ~2 pts from tariff refunds
Diluted EPS$2.02, up 29% YoY, incl. $0.11 from tariff refunds
Cash dividend$0.27 per share, payable Aug 13, 2026

Where the growth came from

Growth was broad enough that the refunds read as seasoning rather than the meal. iPhone, Mac and Services each set a June quarter revenue record. Services has an entertainment scoreboard behind it too: Apple collected 89 Emmy nominations across 15 shows. Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, said the company posted double-digit growth in every geographic segment, and Parekh said the installed base of active devices reached an all-time high across all major product categories and geographic segments.

Siri AI and the software wave

"At WWDC26, we were thrilled to introduce the all-new Siri AI, alongside all of Apple's latest software innovations and important new child safety features," Cook said in the release.

What Siri AI becomes matters more than this quarter's numbers. It is Apple's bet in the assistant race, and WWDC26 gave it a stage alongside the rest of the software wave. Apple's AI push is wider than the assistant: the company has also opened Xcode to rival AI models, a quiet move the weekly tech roundup flagged during a week with no flashy releases. The financial picture is cleaner than the product one: the quarter's records came from the usual hardware and services engine, with the tariff refunds layered on top.

Dividend, call and what's next

The board declared a cash dividend of $0.27 per share, payable August 13 to shareholders of record as of the close of business August 10. Apple streams its earnings call at 2 p.m. PT on July 30 at apple.com/investor/earnings-call, with a replay available for about two weeks.

The tariff footnote leaves one question open: what next quarter looks like without the refunds. Not every asterisk this earnings season was so flattering: Tesla's revenue rebound still left free cash flow negative and profit growth anemic, per the Tesla Q2 earnings breakdown. The boost made this headline cleaner; if it does not recur, the year-over-year math gets steeper even with demand intact. That is a problem for September. Today, the record stands.
