Ball x Pit's Naturalist Update: 11 balls, 2 characters, one impossible choice

"It turns out we couldn't stop making content for this game," the team wrote in a PlayStation Blog post. "We had a little breathing room before release and a pile of ideas we didn't want to waste, so we honestly just kept going." That spillover creativity is now packaged into The Naturalist Update, the final free content drop for Ball x Pit on PS5, arriving August 6.

Two characters, two opposing philosophies

The update gives players a real choice. Two new unlockable characters push in opposite directions. The Ballbearer leans into firepower with double ball slots but no passive items. The Hoary Hoarder does the opposite: two ball slots and double passive slots, letting item Evolutions do the work. The tradeoff forces an early commitment: go aggressive or build around synergies. The split creates a specialization dynamic not unlike how developers increasingly design models for distinct tasks rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, as seen with Alibaba's split of Qwen3 into instruct and thinking variants.

Ball x Pit has been getting free updates since launch, adding balls and items each time. The Naturalist Update is the biggest in terms of character design. It brings characters that change how players build their loadouts from the ground up. Earlier updates added pieces one by one; this one reworks the starting setup.

Choosing between the Ballbearer and Hoary Hoarder is a tough call. Double ball slots give more active attacks on screen, but losing passives removes the crutch of item stacking. Double passives allow stronger Evolutions with effects that can chain into big swings, but fewer ball slots mean each throw has to count. The update encourages trying different builds, and the team wants to see what players figure out. The tradeoff between ball slots and passive slots forces a decision about whether active offense or system synergies deliver more value. That same question plays out in AI system design, where the choice between raw scale and orchestrated specialization remains unsettled, as noted by the model race analysis.

Eleven new balls and five new passives

The Naturalist Update also adds 11 new balls, each with a distinct behavior:

  • Lightning Bug spawns a firefly with every bounce that seeks out the strongest enemy and zaps nearby targets.
  • Mosquito Kingdom slowly builds a swarm, spawning one or two mosquitoes on each hit that deal 100 to 150 damage each and heal the player on a killing blow.
  • Drill tears through enemies from behind, piercing them and dealing extra damage.
  • Flesh starts at half damage but accelerates with every bounce until it becomes a blur.
  • Armageddon calls down a destructive meteor shower on impact, hitting everything within a three-tile radius.

Five new passive items also enter the rotation:

  • Platinum Dumbbell rewards clean shots by giving balls a damage boost that lasts until they hit the back wall.
  • Inglorious Hammer makes balls that hit a wall or the back of the arena strike a random enemy for reduced damage.
  • Remote Detonator
