Wildlands' role players once baffled Ubisoft. Last Rites is built for them

Ubisoft Bordeaux has a confession about Ghost Recon Wildlands. For a long time, the team did not understand what a big part of its community was actually doing in the Bolivian open world. Yossef Benzeghadi, the studio's Live Strategy and Analytics Director, remembers a group the live team internally called "Sandbox Players." They ran cooperative mil-sim sessions, piled optional challenges on top of the game, and sometimes took hours to complete one mission perfectly.

"To be honest, at first, we did not really understand what the heck they were doing in our Bolivian Wildlands," Benzeghadi says in an interview alongside the release of Last Rites.

Those players were role playing. Once the studio figured that out, through community interviews and data-informed playtests, they became the compass for a surprising project: a major free update for a game that launched nearly a decade ago.

An update built around the players who never left

Last Rites is out now on PS4 and PS5. First, and by popular demand: 4K and 60 FPS support on PS5 and PS5 Pro. Much of the rest of the patch is aimed at the sandbox crowd the studio once struggled to understand.

New Ghost Parameters in the Options menu let you enable instant death or limitless revives, carry one or two primary weapons, and decide whether unused ammo is kept when you reload. From the Lobby page, World and Session Settings move the weather, time of day, alarms, jammers, and the rate of enemy patrols under player control. Co-op groups can even switch on friendly fire, for realism or light PvP role play. HUD and UI options got wider too, and the new Difficulty settings break down into granular tweaks like Enemy Perception, Endurance, and Vehicle Breakability.

None of this is generic live-service filler. "We know that a large part of our community are avid role players, so we crafted some of the features around their requests," says Creative Director Olivier Leonardi.

La Llorona brings Wildlands its darkest mission

The update's other half is the story. The Ghosts push into a darker, more oppressive Bolivia controlled by Los Penitentes, a fanatical cult bound together by faith, sacrifice, and violent justice. Their leader is La Llorona, an enigmatic figure the developers describe as a resurrected arbiter of justice, revered by many Bolivians almost as a saint. Her disciples wear masks that erase their individuality and obey without question.

"We wanted this new antagonist to be quite dark and complex, but also someone that was deeply wounded, betrayed by the people she loved and trusted," Leonardi explains. Her vengeance targets anyone connected to what sealed her fate, including the corrupt Bolivian government and its armed wing, Unidad.

The mission starts as a standard incursion and turns into something else. Players piece together La Llorona's story through documents and audio recordings scattered across the world. Leonardi's proudest moment is the reveal at Varga's villa: La Llorona in her weeping widow mask, the confrontation with her cultists, and Nomad facing his CIA handler Emily Price over what he discovers there.

A decade-old game still earning free updates

The patch also unlocks a pile of content that used to sit behind paywalls or challenge grinds. Many weapons and equipment are now free, including previously unreleased camos and unobtainable challenge rewards, and you can claim every Ghost War PvP class in the in-game store without paying. New Character Smith items mark the 25th anniversary of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, including a mysterious Operator Skin earned by finishing Last Rites. PlayStation Plus members get their own treats: an Iconic Skin of La Llorona, the P416 Micteca, and the 4-SHUR Blue Leader Sunglasses. Subscribers are already having a good month: the August PlayStation Plus lineup adds Dying Light 2 Stay Human: Reloaded Edition and Big Walk on August 4.

Benzeghadi describes working on the update as "quite an archaeological ride." The team dug up its old postlaunch research on player behavior and refined it with fresh conversations, including direct meetings with community leaders. It sorted feedback into themes and ranked them by player impact, intensity, and fit with the player profiles mapped years earlier.

Wildlands' long tail comes down to the freedom its players prize most, Benzeghadi argues: "a unique blend of open world and a fun immersive tactical military third person shooter." The same play is running elsewhere in Ubisoft's catalog: the Division 2's Dust Storm event brings free Warlords of New York access and new Dust Devil bosses.

Last Rites is free for everyone on PS4 and PS5. Newcomers can jump in via Ubisoft+ Classics, bundled with PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium, or via the new Definitive Edition, which stacks the Season Pass, Year 2 Pass, and four content packs on top of the base game. Reviving old Ubisoft worlds is good business right now: Black Flag Resynced's record-breaking launch moved two million copies in a single day.

Not bad for a game this old. Some free content runs end with a farewell update, as Ball x Pit just did with its Naturalist Update; Wildlands is still growing. As Benzeghadi puts it, "there's never been a better time to jump in."
